NAME: King Richard
AGE: Forties
MOTIVATION: Richard primarily wants to be loved and respected and to prove he isn’t as much of the buffoon as he actually is. He would also like to have sex at some point.
ARRIVAL SCENARIO: Artifact

HISTORY: Wikia Page (Setting is the year 1256)

PERSONALITY: Richard is a man who has never grown up. To put it in perspective, his parents never paid all that much attention to him, especially given he was overshadowed by his elder brother Kingsley for whom the kingdom was intended to go to. He was the sort of boy who needed a lot of attention, which he primarily received from his wetnurse Pearl, who was the only one to love him until the point that his father died and his elder brother decided to abdicate, leaving a young Richard as king. Instead of being overlooked, he soon discovered that everyone would only pretend to love and adore him out of obligation. Eventually he learned to be okay with that or at least, convince himself he was.

Richard’s reign as king is one of a spoiled and juvenile man who is never made to understand the consequences of his actions, especially since much of the more difficult parts of ruling a kingdom is handled by his underlings like Gareth. He had fashioned himself in a tyrant who rarely considered what he did to others because he believed that people would respect him if they feared him. Instances of this can be seen in how he invaded Valencia and killed most of the people there to steal their priceless jewel or how he killed the last few generations of his own personal chefs because he disliked the food he was given. His only considerations were only ever for himself, never for his kingdom or people. This changed after he was deposed by his brother and wife, but even afterward it took time for him to gain perspective on his past actions.

He’s never been loved. The true sticking point for Richard that has stuck with him is that he’s spent his entire life being pampered, but he’s never had anyone that values him for just being who he is. His adventures back in his own kingdom forces him to come face to face with his own people, who themselves have decided they never needed him and instead simply established their own republic without him. He’s wanted and unneeded, so he latches onto any friendships he can. Despite previously being mortal enemies, he latches onto Galavant as both a comrade and role model in hopes that he can do enough and be enough for others to actually like him. Even his vanquished foes of Valencia are forced to endure a party in their honor as he tries to earn their approval and support.

He’s very open with his feelings and does not feel any particular shame in showing them. Unable to truly come around to being ‘butch’ or ‘manly’ like both Gareth and Galavant insist, he is the sort of man who always wears his feelings out on his sleeves. Anything he feels is usually exaggerated, whether it be spending eight hours crying after being told he was unlovable or showing manic glee when he decides to start telling jokes to his court. He has a large heart capable of a lot of kindness and inexplicable cruelty. He needs to feel happy and has spent his life believing that this is really his only obligation, even if it means putting on baby fights for his own personal amusement.

Unfortunately Richard is hopelessly naive, which is mostly seen when he trades the priceless jewel of Valencia for a lizard that he believes to be an actual dragon. He allows himself to believe that people like him more than they actually do and he spends a year pining after the wife he kidnapped and forced to marry him. It takes a lot to shake him out of what he believes and it took seeing Madelina hook up with his brother for him to finally begin to think that she might not actually ever actually fall in love with him. Yet at the same time, it takes very little to drag him into madness and he doesn’t ever question the fact that the dwarves he joins up with are all ordinarily sized men facing giants that are likewise ordinary sized men.

Almost absurdly, Richard fancies himself as a ‘modern thirteenth century man’ meaning that although he was more than willing to kidnap and force a woman to marry him, he firmly believes in women’s rights and would never force Madelina to sleep with him. He holds love upon a pedestal and doesn’t believe that sex should ever happen until a man and woman are in love, which has had the consequence of meaning he’s never actually had sex before. Trying to conceal his virginity, especially as a now middle aged man, is a particularly sore point with him and one he tries to downplay or ignore altogether.

There are two song numbers that speak a lot of Richard’s particular insecurities. In “Will My Day Ever Come”, he asks himself if he will ever be more than just a fat loser or if he’d be a good king, for which he is forced to conclude that he’s never achieved any of the things he had aspired for as a child. In “My Dragon Pal And Me”, he places a lot of insecurities on his new lizard that may or may not be an actual dragon where he sings about how it’s his intention for the two of them to prove everyone else wrong about the both of them being useless. At this point he’s still leaning back on his older conceptions that by being terrifying and monstrous, they might yet still earn the respect of others.

Despite all the bad things that has happened to him of late, he still remains stubbornly optimistic. He might be inwardly depressed to be an exiled king with nowhere to belong, but he considers it to be merely an unlucky streak that he will soon find himself on the other side of. He believes that he is destined for great things because he must either believe that or accept that he’s a useless buffoon that no one likes or wants around. Consequently it took very little for him to commit himself to Galavant’s quest because he is a man desperate for a purpose of which the universe has not yet made apparent to him, even if he is supposed to the One True King To Unite Them All.

SKILLS / POWERS: Richard is a king who spent his entire life coddled. Consequently he has very little in the way of actual skills in any way whatsoever. Aside from his great capacity for being oblivious to the effects of his own actions, Richard offers very little. At best, he can sit a horse and can wave around a sword and probably not stab himself in the face with it. He does sing magnificently though.
NERFING: N/A

INVENTORY:
The Hero’s Sword - a legendary sword for the ‘One True King To Unite Them All’ whose magical powers appear to be limited to getting stuck inside of stones and no one else being able to pull it out as well as combating the magic of the dark dark evil way. - NERFED
Tad Cooper - A real life actual dragon that may or may not actually simply be a lizard. It’s implied to eventually grow up into a real dragon. - NERFED (but may become un-nerfed with in-game points)
A Horse - Of course. The standard mount of choice for any man who is trying to find his purpose in life.
His Clothes - The kind of clothes that you would expect an exiled king to find himself wearing while traveling the countryside. They are already nerfed by weeks of travel.
